Donald Trump’s Wealth Originates from Canadian Artisanal Gold Mining

In the city that I live now, Victoria BC, much of the downtown harbour’s turn of the century red brick buildings and warehouses (which are now all fabulous bars and shops) were built to supply and serve Western Canada’s many gold rushes – including the famous Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon. Artisanal gold mining has certainly enriched many people’s lives. Today I learned that the trajectory towards wealth and fame of the guy currently treating Canada like a punching bag, Donald Trump, was, like so many other modern businesses, people and institutions, originally propelled by artisanal gold mining.

Friedrich Trump, Donald Trump’s grandfather, built a business in Bennett, northern British Columbia near the Yukon border. Bennet sprang up because of the Klondike Gold Rush. Friedrich called his business the Arctic Restaurant & Hotel. It was a restaurant and a brothel. You can read about it here: https://lnkd.in/gAbta8jP

Not everything works out the way one hopes! But sometimes, setbacks and detours lead to unexpected opportunities and teach us resilience. I am therefore calling on President Trump to support or invest in the improvement of artisanal gold mining – a noble and profitable pursuit that can propel many people upwards into a better life – in memory of his grandfather.
