Gold Nuggets – Mercury Free Gold in Papua New Guinea

In the rugged landscapes of Papua New Guinea, a small-scale miner with his distinctive red cap emblazoned with PNG’s national bird of paradise, proudly displays a pan of beautiful gold nuggets produced that day. This is the culmination of a day’s arduous but rewarding work. Nuggets are special. Not only are they a sign of rich deposits, they are also unambiguously produced without the use of mercury. The coarse gold fraction of gold – large flakes through to nuggets – is easily separated from concentrates without the use of mercury and this is the normal practice in PNG. In this sense the PNG alluvial gold sector already produces about 30% of its gold mercury free – great news! The gold from this operation flows into a supply chain that has developed a unique system to capture this information and produce 30% of its doré bars as separate mercury free bars, with the aim to improve to 50% and ultimately 100% asap. This innovative approach allows for the production of certified mercury-free gold bars, which can be offered to consumers.
